About this month
What every family should know about Muharram
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar year and one of the four sacred months in which fighting was forbidden and sin is considered graver. Its very name means 'forbidden', a reminder that the year opens with restraint rather than celebration.
The tenth day, Ashura, marks the day Allah saved Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ fasted this day and encouraged his companions to fast the ninth alongside it.
